Last week I had an opportunity to see the early stages of Sung Dong’s art installation in Selfridges department store. From last week, he’s been building a city out of biscuits on the lower ground floor. When I went last week, it had barely begun to take shape but today I went back to see how it was progressing, and it’s become something to behold.
Four people are working on it, placing each biscuit individually to create sports stadia, skyscrapers, apartment blocks, towers, palaces, castles out of everything from shortbread to chocolate bourbons. I took some photos of the city as it was. If I’m lucky, I’ll be back on Wednesday when the city of biscuits will be dismantled and fed to visitors. Ephemeral art at its tastiest, assuming they haven’t all gone stale!
