I am fascinated by the proximity in which the rich and poor live their lives. Nowhere is this more evident than in the cities around the world where wealthy boroughs are separated from the destitute by sometimes little more than a single road. This photograph was taken in East London across the road from Canary Wharf, a multi-billion pound office development and retail mall where seventy thousand people work in skyscrapers every day and half a million shoppers go to spend their wages.
Although the wharf is only across the road from where this photograph was taken, the difference could not be more stark. Here are the remnants of brutal and ugly post-war housing estates that have been the breeding ground for social deprivation, crime and violence. The bright promises of Canary Wharf with its jobs and security has brought little to the other side of this road. Instead of shiny glass, steel and green trees there is only hot concrete, choking traffic fumes and peeling red paint.
My submission to a small zine a Flickrite is putting together.
