The Pura refinery at Canning Town

22Aug06

Right on the banks of a peninsular in the River Lee, and yards from the Thames opposite the Millennium Dome is an old vegetable oil refinery owned by Pura. Since 2005 it’s been under a slow process of demolition. With every month that passes the place looks even more derelict, broken pipes, heat stained metal, dirt and grime everywhere.

I’ve walked down to the refinery many times to take photos but never really been satisfied with what I’ve taken. Yesterday I went for another walk with Eamon after work with the sun setting giving everything a fantastic golden hue and a long dark shadow. It was wonderful light to shoot in and, despite having taken hundreds of photographs here before, I came back with a few really pleasing shots.

I don’t know what the fate of the Pura site is, once the refinery is pulled down. I suspect it will end up as housing for City workers in spite of its proximity to the nature reserve on the other bank of the Lee. Whatever takes its place it’s unlikely to offer the same brutal decaying pipeworks, storage tanks and battered tin shacks.

My, my. What a shot, the sky kid, just great.

Canning town as not changed, its a poor area, its been poor in the day of 1880 and its still poor. Why it was poor when I gew up there, yes I came out of CANNING TOWN.

Although I no longer live ther, no I live in a very fashiobale part of Germany with nice live resturants shops at my figer tips, I have travelled the world, I have a great job in Investmnet banking, yes popel from Canning town do get places in this life.
The one thing I miss is although I had nothing in Canning town I had mate that were true and the people are true. Now I live in a great place but the people are pretentious ass holes.

I really do miss Cannning town and thank you for the shot.

    SEE YA MATE:

    Darren
