Statues on tops of buildings across London

30Apr07

Anyone have a clue what’s going on here? We noticed these statues out on a walk around the South Bank on Sunday.

They’re all perched on buildings such that they’re on the skyline. I think we counted 6 or 7 of them on buildings both the north and south banks. It must have been an impressive wayleave operation to get permission on so many disparate buildings so I can only assume this is a well funded thing. I haven’t seen anything about it in the news or the London blogs, though. Does anyone know what they are and who put them there?

The photos below were taken at 300mm and then cropped to give you an idea of distance. They were taken from one of the terraces of the National Theatre. They really are quite scary once you notice them. It feels like you have people watching you, a feeling that grows as you notice there are more and more of them around.

If you know what they are, please leave a comment here or on the photo’s Flickr page, I’d love to find out where they came from.

Edit: Thanks to Steve and James in comments and MadeInSheffield on Flickr for pointing out these are by Antony Gormley who has an exhibition opening at the Hayward. He’s most famous for the Angel of the North statue in Tyneside. More on the statues on buildings here.

These statues are by Anthony Gormley and entitled Event Horizon, to tie in with his exhibition starting 17th May at the Hayward Gallery. I believer there will be about 30 of them spread over a 1.5km distance from the gallery.
