iSync and the Sony Ericsson K810i

09Jun07

Update 9th April 2009: Fantastic news from Royd in the comments. Sony Ericsson has seen the light and is now offering an iSync plugin for their phones. You can go to the site and download it from here, authorised, free and supported.

I bought a new phone to replace my godawful Nokia N80. It’s a Sony Ericsson K810i and it’s all very shiny and nice. The only problem is that it isn’t yet supported in iSync on the Mac. Last time I had this problem was with the N80 and I fixed it by downloading a piece of XML and plonking it in the right directory. It’s good to share these solutions and, since it’s only a bit of text, it can be shared on forums and the like, which is where I found my N80 solution. Looking around the net I was absolutely mortified to see that the only solutions being “shared” to sync up your K810i with your Mac were being charged for. 10 Euros, at that! Knowing that these “plugins” are actually only a piece of text was incentive enough to sort this out without resorting to paying for it.

If you look at the plugins directory for iSync, you can see that the current iSync version has the K800i, the K810i’s predecessor. I went into the plugins folder, copied the K800i folder and renamed it to match the new phone. I dug into the 3 text files inside and replaced the instances of “K800″ with “K810″. For this, these guys want 10 Euros? Bah!

Here’s the “plugin” for free and exactly how you install it.

  1. Extract this zip to your Desktop, it should leave a folder called “SonyEricsson-K810.phoneplugin”
Go to the Applications folder and find the iSync application, right click it and Show Package Contents.
In the resulting folder, drill down to Contents > Plugins > ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice > Contents > Plugins.
Copy the folder from your desktop into here. If iSync was running, restart it and it should recognise your phone, now.

If you want to do it without downloading the files from me, here’s how I created it - you can probably extrapolate the same method for most incremental phone releases, regardless of brand. They really don’t change all that much between small model numbers. It’s probably rather useful to know since Apple aren’t very fast at updating iSync to cover new phone models.

  1. Go to the Applications folder and find the iSync application, right click it and Show Package Contents.
In the resulting folder, drill down to Contents > Plugins > ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice > Contents > Plugins.
Copy the folder named “SonyEricsson-K800.phoneplugin” and rename it “SonyEricsson-K810.phoneplugin”.
    Open SonyEricsson-K810.phoneplugin > Contents > Resources.
In here are 4 files. One of them is the tiff file that you see representing your phone. Rename com.sonyericsson.K800.tiff to com.sonyericsson.K810.tiff
For each .plist file, open it in Textpad and do a Find/Replace for the word “K800″ and change each instance to “K810″. Don’t miss any!
Save the files and quit iSync and reopen it, if you had it running. iSync should now recognise your phone.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what I’m doing. If this breaks your phone, nukes your address book or sets fire to your cat, then please understand that what you are doing here is hacking the internals of your iSync application, hooking it up to your phone and letting some stranger’s advice on the internet ruin your day. It works for me is all the warranty I can give you! Back up your Mac’s address book regularly and before you mess with this. If you’ve got any advice for other users for how you fixed your niggles with iSync, feel free to add it in the comments.

Update: Johan points out in comments that as well as some very expensive plugins, mobile.feisar.com sell a plugin for €1.49 that will do USB syncing (see Update 2, below) as well as give you a little TIFF image of the phone for iSync to display. If you want these extra bits, €2 (£1.49) is nowhere near as bad as some of these guys want to charge!

Update 2: Following Johan’s useful comments regarding USB compatibility, I took a hunt through the plugin with a view to adding it. The plugin specifies a Vendor ID and a Model ID of a given phone. Obviously this changes between phone models. If you plug the phone into USB and look at the data in the USB Prober application (part of Apple’s developer tools) you can read them off. In our case, the K810i has a model ID of 0xD0A1 vs the K800’s model ID of 0xD039. I’ve changed the plugin I’ve got on this site, so if you update it you should be able to sync via USB. One weird thing I found was that I had to remove the K810 from iSync, where’d I’d set it up to Sync via Bluetooth. Once I did that and reconnected the phone, everything was fine. Hope this all helps if you are lacking in Bluetooth on your Mac!

Also - surprise! Dennis has kindly furnished me with a K810i image for the iSync plugin so we can all enjoy a picture of our pretty (or ugly, YMMV) phones. Thanks Dennis!

The updated plugin is here. The old one, minus image and USB functionality is here.

Update 3: Leonardo has commented below on another useful addition to Bluetooth functionality that lets you send and receive SMS messages from your Mac using Mac’s Address Book and K810’s Bluetooth connection. I tested it out and it works fantastically - I really had no idea that was something you could do so easily. Thanks, Leonardo

Update 4: A commenter points out that Leonardo’s method only enables SMS via the Mac address book, which is fine if that’s all you would want or use. Leonardo’s method would also, pretty obviously, stop the K700 from working in the unlikely event you have both phones in regular use. See comments 31 and 33.

Yeah really easy once you know how. Thanks for the tip, i agree this sort of stuff should not be charged for. Robbing B%^&$&£$ds.

10 Euros for an iSync Plugin? That really is too much!

    But I don’t know where you’ve been looking - I got my K810 plugin from http://mobile.feisar.com/ for £1.49 (about 2 Euros)!

It works perfectly via Bluetooth AND USB cable (which your free one doesn’t).

It also has the correct icon in iSync (even the colour of the phone!), and has a simple installer - no hacking the iSync application required (which gets overwritten every time you re-install or update iSync anyway).

The guys at that site have also been extremely helpful with some other Sony Ericsson issues I was having and gave me free technical support within an hour.

I don’t know, but for me, £1.49 is more than worth it for a professional, fully tested, fully functional, and fully supported Plugin, not to mention all the other help and information offered for free on the same site.

    Don’t be so cheap!!

hey, i was so glad to find your website. yeah, totally agree about being charged for something so simple.

I do have a problem now though, my mac can’t seems to detect my phone even after i turn on the bluetooth on my phone, neither will it work after i plug in the USB cable.. Hmm… have i done something wrong? (i downloaded the file that you uploaded)

    any advice? thanks!

  6. 6 Dennis Posted June 17th, 2007 - 5:36 pm

    Ok, problem solved.
My own mistake.. i’ve forgotten that i need to pair my mac with my phone first.. *blush*
    sorry… and thanks once again!

  7. 7 Nic Posted June 17th, 2007 - 7:19 pm

    Johan,

The one I found first was this one. €9.95! I suppose you can see why I would be annoyed at that.

I’m curious what you mean by working with USB? I’d be surprised if the plugin here does anything different to the k800i one that Apple supply.

I’m happy for people to make a choice, and I agree a couple of Euros is not so bad if they want a picture of their phone in isync and/or the USB functionality that you say is lacking in mine. It is, of course, no skin off my nose!

  8. 8 Johan Posted June 17th, 2007 - 8:38 pm

    Hi Nic,

To be fair, the €9,95 ( tax!) novamedia plugin you found actually supports over 70 different phones, although I do resent having to pay extra for 69 plugins I’ll never use, just to get the one I do want! That’s partly why I got the feisar one.

And if you think novamedia’s are expensive, have a look at the ones at http://www.mactomster.de - €7.49 each!! Unbelievable!

Your K810 plugin has the code in it from the K800, which is why it doesn’t work for USB syncing. Every phone is different via USB - it’s not enough just to change K800 to K810.

    Johan

  9. 9 Nic Posted June 17th, 2007 - 8:56 pm

That’s great info Johan - I’ll update the main post with what you’ve said so there’s a good clear decision for peeps to make.

  10. 10 Dennis Posted June 18th, 2007 - 7:01 pm

    hey guys,

if you do need picture of the actual phone to appear on isync… lemme know..
I’ve created one for. The correct icon (even the colour of the phone!) will appear on your isync. simply need to replace the “com.sonyericsson.K810.tiff”

nic, just lemme know how to send it to you so that you can upload here..

note to Johan, I dun think it’s wrong to buy from http://www.mactomster.de or upload the free one. it’s just a matter of personal choice.

if you don’t want to be cheap and rather purchase AND are pleased about it, that’s cool.

As for me, i rather have an alternative option.. and glad that nic has provided such a solution for me (and knowing that Apple will upload the compatibility soon anyway)

    Cheers

  11. 11 Nic Posted June 18th, 2007 - 7:29 pm

    Dennis:

Sure! Wing the tiff to me and I’ll test and add it to the zipfile I’m hosting. Many thanks!

    thanks man, awesome plugin!!!
you might wanna check out a widget called “übertragen” (its on versiontracker). It basically is a drop tool to send files to your cellphone (and ftp account). It uses spring loaded folders to show the synced phones - really, really nifty.

  25. 25 Leonardo Posted July 12th, 2007 - 6:56 pm

Good job, this work great to sync your phone with isync.

I’d like to share one more useful thing for your k810i (works for many models)

Unfortunately most of you had probably noticed this plug-in doesn’t affect the “address book enabler”, so for example you won’t be able to send an SMS through your phone by typing on your mac.

To enable this function you basically have two options: buying “address book enabler” (2,20€) and help mobile.fersair.com team get richer or just follow these steps: editing 3 numbers in a file called Telephony.bundle on your mac. To find this file, Control-click on Address Book (quit it first) and choose “Show Package Contents” from the pop-up menu. Then open Contents » Resources, and Control-click on Telephony.bundle. Again pick “Show Package Contents” from the pop-up menu, then navigate into Contents » Resources. There you’ll see a file named ABDeviceCommandSets.plist (if your not too expert please make a backup of this file before proceeding) .

Open this file with a text editor, and look around line 80 for this entry:

    ABDeviceModelStrings

    K700

You must change “K750″ to “K810″, then save your changes (make sure you don’t rename the file’s extension .plist) and quit the editor and you’ll be able to send SMS messeges, receive them, see Caller ID, and be able to place calls through your Mac.

  26. 26 Nic Posted July 12th, 2007 - 7:26 pm

    Leonardo - Thanks!

I had no idea this was even possible without extra software. I just ran through it and it’s fine. I changed “K700″ to “K810″ and clicked on the Bluetooth icon in Address Book and clicking on “Home” or “Work” number in Address Book gives me the option to send them an SMS. New SMSs pop up on my screen. Superb!

Many thanks - updating the main post with a pointer to your comment.

  27. 27 Leonardo Posted July 12th, 2007 - 8:33 pm

Glad to help you - Nic - and all the visitors! Enjoy!

    P.S.
I made a little mistake on my last post: I wrote

    “… You must change “K750″ to “K810″… ”

of course I meant to say you must change “K700″ to “K810″.

  28. 28 Ian Posted July 12th, 2007 - 9:57 pm

Thanks for the file it did the job!!

  29. 29 Simon Posted July 17th, 2007 - 6:36 am

I followed your instructions exactly but it still won’t let me connect to my K810. I completely removed the phone and re-added it again also from my mac but to no avail. I have Tiger 10.4.8. Also, there is no K810 plugin for me to change in the folder that you specified. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  30. 30 Ben Posted July 17th, 2007 - 5:20 pm

Cheers for the update works perfectly.

  31. 31 Johan Posted July 25th, 2007 - 2:33 pm

    Leonardo,

Your Address Book “solution” does not work for ALL Address Book functions - only SMS. You should perhaps test things properly before sharing them.

For instance, try clicking the “VoiceMail” button when receiving a call - it does nothing. Neither does the “Answer” button. Both should work as you’d expect.

Also, following your steps you completely DISABLE support for the K700!

The Address Book Enabler from http://mobile.feisar.com/ does correctly work with ALL Address Book functions. SMS, Caller ID, Making & Receiving Calls, Sending calls to Voicemail, answering calls etc.

It may cost a couple of Euros, but at least their solution works 100%, and is a simple installer (no editing of files required).

  32. 32 Matt Posted July 25th, 2007 - 9:26 pm

    Thank dude!!

Was gutted to find my phone wasn’t supported, thanks for all your work :)

  33. 33 Leonardo Posted July 26th, 2007 - 6:00 pm

    Johan,

I’m sorry I didn’t test all the address book enabler options, in fact I only use SMS. You are right, only SMS and send a call work properly.

I knew about k700 support disabling, instead and I say sorry aging if I didn’t specified that. Nicholas, please update main post and write my addition has tested only for SMS.

However for those who want go back just follow the same steps backwards and rename k810 with k700. Not too bad I believe!

    Cheers!

  44. 44 lanturlu Posted August 28th, 2007 - 11:16 pm

Hi, thanks for the nice app, I really appreciate it. Since this seems to be a big K810i mac community here, I thought I would share some concerns I’ve discovered when using my K810i on my MBP. Although not really related to your plugin, I’m sure that some of that can be of interest to this community.

    1) First, I’m using Thunderbird for emailing, therefore, my address book can be exported in .ldif format, which can then be imported in Apple’s Address Book for later isyncing. Its all great except that Apple Address Book doesn’t import the field called “homeStreet”, which can be really useful if you use your phone to remember the address of people you know. It does import all the rest, like city, country, phone number, etc. Anyone have experienced the same problem?

    2) When you copy pictures with Finder, the modified date on each file do not take into account the time zone (although the EXIF date is OK). The date/time modified for me is 8h in the future (and I’m at GMT -8), not the real date/time written in the EXIF data or printed on the picture if you put that option on. That’s only a minor inconvenient, as I’ve found a software (cocoviewX, quite buggy, doesn’t work on a list of more than ~120 files at a time) to set the modification date to the one found in the EXIF data. Do you also experience that problem with the K810i ?

    3) USB charging the phone on the MBP is kind of useless, my phone was plugged for 3h in my (non-sleeping) MBP and I only got a 1% to my charge. I never tried on another computer, so maybe it’s just the USB port on my laptop that refuse to charge my phone, even if the power cord is plugged and it’s not running on battery power. I suspect that this is another of those Apple “feature” that you can’t change, made to “protect” Mr/Mrs Stooopid to completly drain their laptop battery life to their phone. Anyway, do you also have this problem?

    4) Ejecting the phone from the mac can be really tricky, it just doesn’t want to do it most of the time. I’ve replaced the standard 128mb M2 card for a 4gb one, and it seems to have increase the occurrence of that problem. Basically, once I eject the “PHONE” and the “PHONE CARD” icons from my desktop, if I have made some file transfers during that connection, the “PHONE CARD” icon will immediately come back, not willing to be ejected, saying that’s it is still in use. Even if I quit finder completely (using Activity monitor to kill it) the same problem will happen. The phone say that it is fine to disconnect but when I do it, OSX complains that I did unplug it without first ejecting it. Only if I wait for ~30 min will I be able to safely eject it, as it once happened to me after I forgot it plugged for a long time. Anyone else have this problem?

    5) I bought a CST-60 charger, which is an official Sony Ericsson made for phone with fastport like the K810i, K800i, K750i, etc, to replace my UK charger with US-plug adapter, which is quite bulky. (I had to order my phone through the UK since the K810i is not available here). Problem is it just doesn’t charge my phone. It connects, but nothing happens to the battery. I could return it but it would cost me more in shipping than what I paid for it (~6$). Has anyone been using a CST-60 to charge their K810i ? There is not the same amount of metal pins in the connector as my original charger, although both fits properly into the port, so I’m doubting now that it can really be used with the K810i.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, I hope we manage to solve some of those issues.

    Lanturlu.

Same problem as comment 56. Not aligning dates by one hour when syncing - otherwise great help, thank you.

  64. 64 Chris Posted October 24th, 2007 - 8:48 pm

I have the same problem as 44 re ejecting the phone. It mounts as two drives, ejecting either leaves the other which cannot be ejected.

Even ejecting both at once doesn’t help - they both immediately reappear.

    Any ideas?

  65. 65 Xavier Posted October 29th, 2007 - 8:48 pm

Thanks man! Had to redownload the plugin after installing Leopard, and it still works :)

  66. 66 Nic Posted October 29th, 2007 - 8:53 pm

Yes Xavier! I was quite surprised when I saw they haven’t updated their plugins with Leopard, but at least the plugins still work.

  67. 67 Wim Posted October 31st, 2007 - 10:27 pm

    Werkt heel goed!
    Works very good

  68. 68 Bo Andersen Posted November 3rd, 2007 - 4:13 pm

Does the sms function work with leopard? I can’t find the “Telephony.bundle” file within the package.
    Thanks, Bo Andersen. Denmark.

  69. 69 Nic Posted November 3rd, 2007 - 4:24 pm

Apple have removed all the SMS/Addressbook functionality from Leopard I’m afraid, Bo. There’s no way to have that functionality on Leopard.

  70. 70 Bo Andersen Posted November 3rd, 2007 - 9:27 pm

Damn, that was a pretty cool feature. Im not much of a computer-tech guy, but what about a widget? Anyone knows if that is out there?
I have a flat rate sms service, so the sms via mac is very useful to me.
    Thanks, Bo Andersen

  72. 72 marc balcells Posted November 6th, 2007 - 6:04 pm

Does anybody know if you can sync k810i with google calendar without an external app? It looks like the phone has the ability to sync with remote calendars but I have no clue how to configure it. Btw google calendar can use ical standard.

  73. 73 Nic Posted November 6th, 2007 - 6:21 pm

    Marc,

I do exactly that. You can have iCal subscribe to the Google iCal feed. See this link:

    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/13/howto-subscribe-to-a-google-calendar-using-ical/

Then when you use iSync it will synchronise the subscribed calendar to your phone. There are caveats with it - you can’t create an item on your phone’s calendar and have it sync up to google Calendar as far as I’m aware. For me this isn’t a problem, but it may be for you.

  74. 74 pranav Posted November 15th, 2007 - 6:15 am

thanks… it worked really well. no draw backs … ***** rating from my side…

  75. 75 Bruce McL Posted November 19th, 2007 - 6:32 am

For all of you that sync with 1 hour off I have a couple of suggestions.

On my K750i there is a setting for Daylight Savings. It’s in the time and date section of the settings area on the phone. Make sure you have it set properly, then fix the time if necessary. That may help.

On the Mac, make sure you are in the correct time zone. If you check “set time automatically” then your Mac should pick up daylight savings or standard time automatically.

  76. 76 Hilal Posted November 22nd, 2007 - 1:38 pm

There is an even easier installation: put the downloaded SonyEricsson-K810.phoneplugin folder into the ~/Library/PhonePlugins folder. If there is no such folder already on your Mac, just create a new folder in Library - on your Mac’s hard disk or in your user account - and name it PhonePlugins, then drop the downloaded folder inside it.

Thanks for the hack, makes life easier!

Not sure if anyone else has had any problems with sync’in 2008 dates from phone to ical and visa versa?

If you have and know a way to solve it would love to hear it!

    Thanks again

  80. 80 Cookie Posted December 10th, 2007 - 8:50 pm

Thank you very much for this.

Perfect solution for me working beautifully with Address Book and iCal running under Leopard.

  81. 81 Cookie Posted December 10th, 2007 - 10:04 pm

p.s. Just noticed that my iCal is adding 1 hour to my phones appointments from around April onwards, so I seem to be suffering the same issue as King. I followed Bruce McL’s advice above but it hasn’t fixed it.

Thanks to anyone for any other ideas.

  84. 84 Kim Posted December 28th, 2007 - 9:33 pm

    Hi,
Thanks for the tip, sadly I only found it after I’d paid for the plug in!

Anyway still not perfect - fine on the contacts but cant get the calender to
    work.

Put an entry on the mac and it doesn’t come up when synced on the phone
PLUS it wipes any other entry on the phone!

    Anyone got any bright ideas

    best and happy christmas

    Kim

ps running OS 10.4.11 and isyc 2.4

  85. 85 Andrew Posted December 30th, 2007 - 7:44 pm

Ah, marvelous. Thank you so much.

One wonders why Apple do not exploit the wonders of open source -stylee collaboration. They could accept user submissions of plugins and test, provide high-quality artwork for the icons and include them as part of the Apple Software Update. Would seem to be an obvious, cheap, easy way for them to support pretty much every mobile phone out of the box.

A couple of € is not MUCH for a phone plugin, but it’s a hassle to have to a) know I need one, b) find it on the Internet, c) pay for it and d) install it.

(And Apple (or possibly Sony Ericsson) still have to upgrade their underlying software to allow me to upload all-day events and images for contacts. Grumble.)

    love it

I feel quite proud of myself as I am completely computer illiterate yet managed to do this.

  88. 88 Bill Posted January 21st, 2008 - 7:55 pm

I have the same problem (4) that lanturlu has above.

Namely, I can only eject one of my w810i memory or memory card on my Mac. After ejecting the PHONE disk the w810i says “USB connection ended. It is now safe to remove the USB cable.” but the PHONE CARD disk is still mounted on the Mac. When I try to eject this the Mac says “The disk “PHONE CARD” is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again.”

Anyone have a solution? I can’t find a fix anywhere. Nothing on the Sony Ericcson website.

Other than this problem iSync is working perfectly with my phone.

    Bill.

  90. 90 alex Posted February 7th, 2008 - 1:57 pm

    thanx for this…

I totally disagree that things like this should not be charged for…

when you buy osmething you are either paying for the intrinsic value of the item, the work put into making it OR the knowledge of the person[s] who made it.

nobody would complain at a guy who digs some holes in the ground & plants some freely available seeds, lets them grow naturally then sells the results.

but it is good that you done the work and let it go 4 free, that is what it is all about…

    you are a ★★★★★

  106. 106 modbyrd Posted July 30th, 2008 - 6:29 am

i know the isync doesnt work with samsungs, but for some reason i cant get motorola or nokia to work either.

any troubleshooting advice for those phones?

  107. 107 Nic Posted July 30th, 2008 - 10:37 am

    The supported devices are here:

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/

If you’re trying to sync something not on that list, you’ll need a plugin. Nokia do their own plugins (what a concept!) for isync:

    http://europe.nokia.com/A4299040

There do appear to be Samsung ones out there, but as best I can see on German sites. Google is your friend in this case.

  108. 108 cedric Posted August 12th, 2008 - 3:24 am

Hello there, it worked great with osx4… but i’m now on 5… and the system does not see my 810 anymore BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :o((((

  109. 109 Nic Posted August 12th, 2008 - 10:21 am

    @Cedric -

Depending on how you installed OSX10.5 you may need to repair the bluetooth and/or reinstall the plugin. The plugin definitely works with OSX10.5.

  110. 110 $vend Posted August 14th, 2008 - 4:28 pm

Would be great if it also sync’ed the contact pictures.

  111. 111 cedric Posted August 14th, 2008 - 10:03 pm

    Wow.

I used this about two years ago to sync my phone up with Address Book but subsequently haven’t really needed to sync.

I’m just trying to get all my contacts into Address book so I can get them on my iPhone and here I am, back at the same place. Thanks.

PS. Could you change the size of the type in the comments text-box - it’s far too small to read!!

  122. 122 Xl Posted March 9th, 2009 - 6:18 pm

Just wanted to drop a line and say thanks. Your “plug-in” worked like a charm! Thanks for doing this, and most of all, for keeping it free. Not because I didn’t have to pay for something like this, but because of your generosity that you didn’t feel the need to charge for it. Take care.

  123. 123 crazydiamond Posted March 15th, 2009 - 2:07 pm

hey guys , i got the same prob too.

however , you all can go to the main website of Sony Ericsson , search for your phones. and choose support, then software downloads.
you’ll find the plugin for Mac OS iSync there.

    Authorize , Free , and Full. :)
